The Servants’ Loft
For couples wanting privacy, families needing space, or friends looking for a base from which to explore, get an entire floor to yourselves in our bright and cheerful Servants’ Loft.
A cosy yet spacious and well-equipped area for you and up to five friends.
This part of the house was where the households’ servants would have lived in the 19th and early 20th centuries. At first I thought it was an attic conversion, but with some careful sleuthing (and help from an architect friend), I spotted the clues which belied its origins. I’ll be happy to point them out when you visit!
Sadly the Victorians didn’t install a lift back in 1876, so be warned that to reach the top (aka British third) floor, there are quite a few stairs to climb. But I’m happy to help with any luggage you may have, and I reckon it’s worth the climb! You’re also welcome to leave any bulky items like pushchairs downstairs. Besides, when you see the space you’ll be staying in, we’re confident that your response will be the same as those of past guests: “Wow!”
Peace, practicality, and personality.
The loft’s windows are at the back of the house, blocking out any road noise and providing peaceful views towards the tree-lined Homestead Park. It’s so quiet, you’ll forget that this is even part of a house.
Whilst you may want to sit up at the bar for breakfast, the dining table has six chairs, perfect for eating, playing games, setting up a laptop, or unfurling maps to plan your adventures.
If you’re in a group of three or four people, I’ll set up the futon as a bed, and for five or six guests, you’ll also get this full-height double inflatable mattress. They’re both surprisingly comfy!
Along with fast wifi, two towels per guest, a hairdryer, first-aid kit, iron and ironing board, we can also provide a Pack-N-Play travel cot, highchair, and potty. Pillows and duvets are all hypoallergenic, with different tog-ratings appropriate to the season. Of course, the room has a smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector, fire extinguisher and fire blanket. Need extra blankets or giant cushions? We’ve got those too!
Whether you’re a group of friends in York for a celebration, a family on a sightseeing trip, or a couple looking for a home-from-home, we’ve got you covered. Whoever you are, the Servants’ Loft will give you all the independence, privacy and facilities you need.
